Breaking the Bank of Monte Carlo
In the gambling industry, the phrase ‘breaking the bank’ means to win every possible chip on the table, and this was coined when Charles Deville Wells won 1 million French Francs at a Monte Carlo casino. The year was 1891; he spent approximately 11 hours in the casino playing table games, walking away with 1 million Francs (worth a fortune in present day currency).
When Sean Connery was younger, he grew up in a family that loved to gamble. Naturally, Connery took a shining to the pastime too, and in 1963 he decided to play his favourite game, Roulette. He won approximately £10,000 – equivalent to £167,000 in the present-day market.
Thomas Austin Preston Jr. was a gambling sensation; a professional American gambler renowned for his exceptional Poker skills. He moved to Las Vegas in the 70’s, winning the 1972 World Series of Poker, and later on, three more WSOP bracelets.
Archie Karas was a Greek-American gambler, famous for the longest winning streak in gambling history. In 1992, he travelled to Las Vegas with just $50 in his pocket. He loaned $10,000 and turned it into a phenomenal $40 million just three years later. Only, it wasn’t all good news – for Karas lost it all later that same year. Karas is thought to have gambled the most money ever in casinos.
Don Johnson, a professional American gambler, seriously hurt casinos on a winning spree in 2010. Over a period of 18 months, he beat $6 million, $5 million and $4 million dollars out of Tropicana, Borgata and Caesars, respectively. Johnson is now banned from playing at Caesars, and limited to what and how he can play at Borgata and Tropicana.
The tales of gamblers entering casinos, having a betting spree and walking out with hundreds of thousands (and even millions) in cash are extensive. It can happen anywhere; in Las Vegas, Monte Carlo or Macau. It can even happen playing at a reputable online casino.
There is always a chance to win massive amounts of money, but in order to be in with your best shot, it is best to fully understand the rules of your chosen game before playing.
