Moving house is one of the most stressful things that we go through in life, which is why we’ve put this article together for you – our top tips to moving home and keeping in control!
1. Plan in advance
The best way to stay on top of situations is to have a plan and be prepared. For your moving day, make sure that you’re already packed the night before – there’s nothing worse than frenzied packing the morning of the move.
You will usually get your moving date a month or so in advance, giving you time to make a plan and get it in place. Most of the time you’ll need some help moving, so if you need to hire a van or movers, do this as soon as you’ve got your moving date to avoid them being fully booked. For those who don’t need this level of help, enlisting family or friends is a good idea. The more hands the better, especially when you’ve got a lot of stuff to shift!
2. Pack smart
This one can seem obvious, but a lot of people forget about it and then regret it when it comes to unpacking. Pack one room at a time where you can, and label the box so it clearly state which room the items inside belong in. Doing this will make unpacking in your new place easier as you can place boxes in the relevant rooms right away rather than doing a lucky dip when you open them.
As well as this, leave out your essentials the night before, such as a change of clothes, a toothbrush, hairbrush, deodorant etc. You don’t want to have to search for them on the morning of the move, so leave one or two boxes open or get yourself a travel bag so you can throw the last bits in before you go without worrying or delaying yourself.
3. Clean as you go
When you move out, you want to make sure that you leave the house in a clean state so whoever is moving in next doesn’t have to deal with it. The best way to keep on top of this while moving out is to clean a room at a time as you’re packing and start with rooms that you use less. This way, you can clean them ready to move and then not use them again to avoid making more mess and having to clean again.
Some rooms, like bathrooms and kitchens, you’ll need to use up until you leave, so get into the habit of cleaning up after yourself every time you use the room rather than doing a big clean at the end of each week, which is what a lot of people prefer to do. This way the house will be ready for you to leave and you won’t face any delays cleaning up things that you’ve missed as you’re about to go.
4. Know your timeframes
Moving house timeframes will differ for almost every mover, depending on how much notice you’ve had and how urgently you need to move. Some homeowners may have months to prepare, whereas those who are under pressure and thinking “I need to sell my house fast!” may only have a few weeks to get things organised.
No matter what timeframe you’re facing, you can make a plan that will allow you to move out. Make a plan and stick to it – even if it means packing a box every day after work for a week to get things in motion.
Moving house can be stressful, but once you get started, you’ll feel more in control and in no time, you’ll be unpacking in your new home!
