It's about a month until school starts, and less than a month until the Freshman come for orientation, so it's time to start planning club events. I wanted to get in one last summer social, hopefully next week, but I really am awful at coming up with group social events. I'm the kind of person who likes to read, play videogames, watch a movie, troll the internet - all individual or small group activities. So when it comes to creating a fun summer activity for 30 people, I turn to others for their advice. The first answer out of everyone's mouth?
Member: We could have an atheist bacchanalia orgy
Me: Why is that the number one suggestion I get from everyone?
Member: Hey, it's not my fault it's a popular idea for an event. Board game night?
Me: Eh, board game night is kind of the default...like, if I can't think of anything else
Member: I know!
Me: ???
Member: Orgy game night!
Me: lol, thank you
Member: You're welcome
Me: No strip Monopoly for you
Member: =(

Laser Tag, Paintball, Ice Skating, Bowling, Art Gallery/Museum trip, Camping, Bonfire night, Movie Night, Murder Mystery party, costume party... Or you could always check out what the local religious youth group is using to sucker in the kiddies and make it cooler.

My suggestions are: Atheist Charade and Atheist Pictionary. The downsize is you'll need to create a list of words, people's names, and things related to atheism, naturalism, and anti-theism.
ReplyDeleteOh, I forgot. You can also play Atheist Jeopardy and Atheist Trivia Pursuit. Again, you'll need to come out with questions and categories.
ReplyDeleteAfter posting a comment, I happened to bump into something related to House. So, I guess you can watch a House episode. Dr. House is an atheist, which can be one of the question in Atheist Charade/Pictionary/Jeopardy/Trivial Pursuit.

An orgy *would* draw a decent number of people out to the event I'm sure, and it'd provide lots of fodder for people to talk about for months(years?) to come... Word of mouth is a good advertising method for the club eh?
It has serious potential to backfire though. People who have a bad time at a board game/jeopardy/pub crawl/etc night tend to just have a bad time. People who have a bad time at an orgy have a REALLY bad time :P
Still, nothing risked, nothing gained... It's worth a shot at least!
If you really want to make your club work, you should find a co-operative team building activity. Adversarial games are fun, but you don't get much time to introduce yourself to each other when you are dodging paintballs. My RPG club in my university does a hiking course in the hills each year, using obscure gaming trivia to give the next co-ordinates.
ReplyDeleteThe really big kids never turn out, but most others do. Going in groups of three that you switch up two or three times, people really get to know each other. Then you go paintballing after, and commit simulated murder on your new friends.
My college groups often went bowling. There is a lot of downtime in bowling where you can all sit around and talk to get to know each other.

ReplyDeleteHave a couple stands for continuous Rock Band/Guitar Hero(make sure that there is a limit on consecutive songs so people can switch out), then have some tournaments for the other games.
Starcraft and Counterstrike are always good for PC, Halo 3 for the Xbox crowd, and I am not too sure what the PS3 crowd LANs with, I am sure your members could throw out some suggestions.
You will get a lot of people I would guess.
